A CULINARY PARADISE FOR ALL CONNOISSEURS
Emilia-Romagna, the charming region in northern Italy, is rich in artistic beauty, historical and cultural attractions. Its capital, Bologna, also known as Bologna la grassa, is a lively city with an incredible 38km of arcades criss-crossing the streets and squares of its medieval core.
Other medieval villages and elegant cities – Parma, Modena, Ravenna, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara, Rimini and Forli – are lined up like pearls on a string within the region’s diverse landscape. The region, also known as “Motor Valley,” is home to some of the most well-known automobile manufacturers.
Lamborghini, Maserati, Ducati and Ferrari all have their factories here, where they once started. Among the many reasons to visit Emilia-Romagna include its abundance of museums, castles and works of art from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. And not to be missed are the spectacular Byzantine and early Christian mosaics in Ravenna.
The beautiful region is considered one of the richest in Italy in terms of its gastronomic and winemaking tradition. It is home to some of the culinary specialties that have brought Italy worldwide fame: Bologna has its tagliatelle, tortellini, ragù and mortadella; Parma its famous Parma ham, Culatello salami and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese; Modena the traditional balsamic vinegar…
Own traditions and, above all, own recipes have created a culinary treasure here. Stuffed tortellini pasta in a clear chicken broth is probably one of the most famous dishes and a real specialty of Emilia-Romagna.
The wide selection of traditional wines
The entire region is dominated by viticulture. About 58,000hectares of vineyards cover fertile hills and plains. Six different wine-growing regions produce many good wines with protected designation of origin’ All go well with the local cuisine.
While Lambrusco, both the grape and the sparkling wine, is probably the most famous wine in Emilia Romagna, other very good varieties include: Sangiovese, Albana and Pignoletto, and white dessert wines such as the Malvasia di Candia variety.
